For a public marriage record, start with the official marriage-record office in the county where the license was issued. Depending on the county, that may be the recorder, county clerk, or a dedicated vital-records division. Confidential marriage records are handled by the county clerk where the license was issued and have restricted access. A license application, an existing marriage certificate, and a divorce judgment are different records; tell the office which one you need. If you do not know whether the marriage is public or confidential, use the Not sure guidance and ask the county office; do not assume a public-record application is the right one.

An authorized certified copy and an informational certified copy serve different purposes. An informational copy cannot establish identity. The issuing agency’s instructions explain eligibility and application requirements. If another organization requested a certificate, ask it which type it accepts before ordering.
Compare authorized and informational copiesOrdering a certificate in five steps
1. Choose Birth certificate or Marriage certificate.
2. Choose the record county: where the birth occurred or where the marriage license was issued.
3. Open Official certificate instructions and check the office’s record coverage, copy type, current fee and required documents.
4. Use an ordering method listed by that office. Depending on the county and record, this may be online, by mail or in person.
5. Keep your receipt and direct delivery or application-status questions to the issuing office.
Know who is helping with your paperwork.
Start with the registered name, registration number and county shown on the provider’s registration.
Ask the provider for the exact registered name, registration number, county, and expiration date.
Choose that registration county in the directory and contact its county clerk or professional registrations office.
Ask whether the registration is current, whether the name and number match, and how to obtain the county’s written record. Ask about any cancellation or revocation information the office can provide.
Follow the county’s search or copy instructions. There may be a fee, a written request, or an appointment.

What to ask the county clerk

What does LDA registration tell me?
Registration lets you check a county record. It does not make an LDA an attorney or establish that the county recommends the provider. An LDA cannot give legal advice, choose your legal options, or represent you in court. For legal advice about your rights or choices, speak with a licensed attorney.

Open its official birth-record instructions to check the correct office, available ordering methods, copy types, identification, sworn-statement, appointment and payment requirements. A local health registrar may handle recent births. Follow the county’s current routing before calling, visiting or mailing an application. Send applications, identity documents and payments only through the official office’s published process.

Do I check the county where I live?
For LDA verification, start with the county shown on the provider’s registration. For a birth record, start with the county where the birth occurred. For a marriage record, start with the county where the license was issued. Those may be different counties.
Can I verify every registration online?
No single online search is provided by this directory. Some counties offer a search tool, while others ask you to contact the clerk or submit a written request. Use the method shown for the county, and ask the office if a search result is unclear or incomplete.
Is this directory free to use?
